My name is Mayte Gómez. I was born in Madrid in a family of Anglo-Irish and Andalusian origin.
I lived in Madrid until I was 18, in Canada from 18 to 35 and in the UK from 35 to 43. I currently live in southern Spain, in the small town of Jerez de la Frontera, in the province of Cádiz, near Seville.
I have been a theatre artist (actor, producer, writer, workshop facilitator, in Madrid, Canada and Latin America) and an academic (I have a BA and MA in Theatre Studies and a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from York, Guelph and McGill respectively, all in Canada).
I have been an university lecturer in Canada as well as the UK (London, Lancaster, Nottingham) and have published in English and Spanish in the US, the UK, Spain, Latin America and South Africa.
From the year 2005 I work as a counsellor. I have trained in Psychosynthesis in the Institute of Psychosynthesis and the Psychosynthesis Educational Trust, both in London.
Throughout these three careers, I have been practising and teaching Yoga. My main practices are meditation and yoga nidra.
I have trained in Yoga in the Sivananda School and in Total Yoga Nidra in the Yoga Nidra Network.
My vocation is like two sides of the same coin: on the one hand, it is based on my own personal and spiritual development, starting with self-knowledge and driving towards manifesting my potential as much as it is possible to do so; on the other hand, I build that vocation by helping others travel along the same road, being a guide and companion for self-knowledge and expression of potential.
That is how it has always been for me, as a theatre artist, an academic or now a counsellor.
From this humble web page, I want to share the path with you…
Humanist integrative relational COUNSELLING
Humanist integrative relational COUNSELLING is the therapeutic use of a relationship between a professional counsellor and a client, with the goal of facilitating self-knowledge, emotional adaptation, and personal growth, so that the individual can develop and use all his-her inner resources.
Through this relationship, the client can investigate issues of his-her personal history, face a current crisis, understand better his-her behaviour or patterns of thought, deal with a depression, all of it via a journey through his-her emotional map and his-her inner conflicts.
Counselling is not about giving advice or teaching. It is about being a guide or companion, so that the client can clarify things for him-herself. The counsellor helps the client recognize and express feelings, respecting his-her own value system and personal resources, always trusting the individual´s innate capacity for self-development.
This Counselling is also integrative because it includes several views of the human psyche, in the understanding that they are all limited and not comprehensive, and that each client might need a different approach.
Counselling can be useful both to individuals and couples.
I have trained as a counsellor in Integrative Psychosynthesis at the Institute of Psychosynthesis and the Psychosynthesis Educational Trust in London.
I have continued my professional development training in Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Jungian Analysis, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Couples Therapy.
Currently, I am further training in Body Therapy as well as in Supervision.
I am accredited as a Counsellor by Asociación de Psicoterapia y Counselling Humanista de España (APHICE) British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and European Association of Counselling (EAC).
I appear on the BACP Register ( www.bacpregister.co.uk ) with number 047248.
